Ahja Secondary School is situated in South-East of Estonia, 34 km from Tartu (towards Räpina) and 25 km from Põlva.

History

The for-runner of Ahja Secondary School was the School of Kärsa where students started to get education already in 1786. At first it was organized as home tutoring. Regular school work started in 1850.

In 1929/30 the school was given some extra rooms in former Ahja country house.

In 1945 Ahja Elementary School was changed into Ahja Secondary School containing 7 grades.

On March 2nd in 1972 our school was named after a famous Estonian writer Friedebert Tuglas. Ahja Secondary School wears his name still today. Fr.Tuglas (1886-1971), born Mihkelson, spent here the first nine years of his childhood. In 1937 his autobiographic book describing life in Ahja at the end of 19th century was published. It is well known for its interesting characters and translated into many languages.

March 2nd has become an annual honor day of our school where the graduate class recieves their school badges and the winners of a student writing competition (dedicated to the memory of Fr.Tuglas) are awarded.

In April 1996 our schoolhouse was partly destroyed in fire.

In 1996/97 studying took place in three different houses. Starting from Sept1 1997 our students can obtain education in the renewed schoolhouse.

In 2001 the 50th class graduated from Ahja Secondary School.
