Russ Butler
One of my primary interests as an artist not working in their country of origin is that of the role of the artist or immigrant in a foreign culture; a culture that I identify with more than my native culture (I am originally from Bermuda). One of the main components of this interest is in the idea of culture normality, an abstract idea that seeks to divide more than unite. I propose a durational performance in which I will be wearing a shirt or banner saying "CULTURAL NORM" and I will either sit at a table or approach people and hand out name tags that will also state "CULTURAL NORM". This action is a means of critiquing the power structure of culture, a structure which somewhat arbitrarily determines the identity of an individual due to the mandates of their culture.
