Artur Kapp Artur Kapp was born on February 14th 1878 in a small Town named Suure-Jaani in Estonia. In 1891 he moved to St. Petersburg. There he studied organ-playing (teached by Homilius till 1898) and compostition (teached by Rimski-Korsakow till 1900) at the conservatoire. In the following time he continued with his musical work in St. Petersburg and appeared as a concert organist in different cities. In 1903 the director of Moscow conservatoire (V. Safonow) offered Artur Kapp the headship of the school of music in Astrachan. Artur Kapp accepted and started his work in 1904. During the First World War, especially after the communist´s seizure of power in 1917, Kapp´s life in Astrachan became unbearable. In 1920 he was able to return to his country where he conducted the orchestra of opera in Tallinn till 1924. In the same year he was appointed to a chair of compostition at the conservatoire in Tallinn. Several important Estonian composers were his students. After the second occupation of Estonia by Soviet forces in 1944 Kapp had to give up his job at the conservatoire and decided to return to Suure-Jaani where he died on January 14th 1952. Artur Kapp left a whole lot of important works and at the moment his music becomes rediscovered in an almost sensational way. His works will be completly published by the „Eres Edition“. Artur Kapp wurde am 28.2.1878 in der kleinen Stadt Suure-Jaani in Estland geboren. 1891 ging er nach St.Petersburg, wo er am Konservatorium bei Homilius Orgelspiel (bis 1898) und bei Rimski-Korsakow Komposition (bis 1900) studierte. In der Folgezeit setzte er seine musikalischen Tätigkeiten in St.Petersburg fort und trat außerdem in verschiedenen Städten als Konzertorganist auf. 1903 machte der Direktor des Moskauer Konservatoriums V.Safonow Artur Kapp den Vorschlag, die Direktion der Musikschule in Astrachan zu übernehmen und Artur Kapp begann dort seine Tätigkeit im Jahre 1904. In der Zeit des ersten Weltkrieges und vor allem nach der Machtergreifung der Kommunisten im Jahre 1917 wurde das Leben in Astrachan für Artur Kapp unerträglich. 1920 gelang es ihm in die Heimat zurückzukehren, wo er bis 1924 in Tallinn das Orchester des Operntheaters Estonia leitete. In jenem Jahr wurde er zum Professor für Komposition an das Tallinner Konservatorium berufen. Mehrere bedeutende estnische Komponisten haben bei Artur Kapp ihre Ausbildung erhalten. Nach der zweiten Okkupation Estlands durch sowjetische Truppen im Jahre 1944 wurde er gezwungen, seine Lehrtätigkeit einzustellen. Er ließ sich nun endgültig in seiner Heimatstadt Suure-Jaani nieder, wo er am 14.Januar 1952 starb. Artur Kapp hat eine große Anzahl bedeutender Werke hinterlassen und seine Musik erlebt jetzt eine fast sensationelle Wiederentdeckung. Alle seine Werke erscheinen im Verlag Eres.
