Ester Mägi Ester Mägi was born in 1922 . She studied composition with Professor M. Saar at the conservatory in Tallinn and was graduated in 1951. She was awarded the state prize of Estonia in 1980 and the Estonian Annual Music Prize in 1985. Ester Mägi is one of those Estonian composers who are fundamentally characterized by a sence of national identy. Throughout her creative years Ester Mägi´s compositions convey her sence of contact ot the spiritual heritage of her forefathers. One could probably say that her understanding of composing has become more profound. Her concentration on a group of selcted esthetic problems has in the course of time helped her to reach a new, greater mastery. In purlely instrumental compositions her instrumentation plays an importend part in creating a mood of laconic eloquence. Ester Mägi wurde 1922 in Tallinn (Estland) geboren. Sie studierte am Tallinner Konservatorium bei M. Saar und legte 1951 ihr Examen ab. Ihre weitere Ausbildung erhielt sie in Moskau bei Schebalin. Sie lehrte von 1954 bis 1984 Musiktheorie am Konservatorium in Tallinn und erhielt 1980 einen Staatspreis und 1985 den Estnischen Jahrespreis für Musik. Ester Mägi’s Musik baut auf dem geistigen Erbe Estlands auf und sie hat durch kontinuierliche Auseinandersetzung mit Ästhetik einen ganz persönlichen Stil entwickelt. Sie gilt als die „First Lady“ der estnischen Musik.
