Rudolf Tobias Rudolf Tobias (1873-1918), one of Estonia´s most outstanding composers, was the son of a Lutherian cantor. He was born in Käina on the Estonian island Hiiumaa on the 29th, 1873. Tobias was the first Estonian composer to receive professional training at the conservatory in St. Petersburg, where he concluded his studies with final examinations in two principal subjects: composition as a pupil of Professor N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov and organ as a pupil Professor L. Homilius having completed his studies, Tobias worked as organist and choir director at St. John´s Church, St. Petersburg from 1898 to 1904, when he took a job in Tartu. In 1908 Tobias went to Germany, where he worked on his most important composition, the oratorio „Jonah´s Mission“, Professor H.Kretzschmar, direktor of the Berlin academic Conservatory of Music, appointed Tobias to a teaching post at the Conservatory, which he held for the rest of his life. Rudolf Tobias (1873-1918), wurde als Sohn eines Kantors am 29. Mai 1873 in Estland auf der Insel Hiiumaa (Dagö) in Käina geboren. R.Tobias war der erste estnische Komponist, der eine professionelle Ausbildung am Petersburger Konservatorium erhielt, die er 1897 in zwei Spezialfächern beendete: in der Kompositionsklasse bei Prof. N. A. Rimsky- Korsakov und in der Orgelklasse bei Prof. L. Homilius. Nach dem Konservatorium arbeitete er als Organist und als Chorleiter (1898 - 1904) in der St.Johanniskirche zu Petersburg, bis er nach Tartu (Dorpat) übersiedelte. 1908 begab R. Tobias sich nach Deutschland, wo er an seinem Hauptwerk, dem Oratorium „Des Jona Sendung“ arbeitete. Nachdem der Rektor der Berliner Akademischen Hochschule für Musik Prof. H. Kretzschmar sich mit der Partitur des Oratoriums befasst hatte, berief er R. Tobias 1912 an die genannte Schule als Lehrkraft, wo dieser bis zu seinem Tode arbeitete.
