                            PETIT BLEU DE GASCOGNE,
                                      SMALL GASCONY BLUE

HISTORY:  The Petit Bleu de Gascogne is a Scenthound of ancient lineage, eminently French, showing signs of certain distinction. They have descended from the original scenting dogs of Gaul and the Phoenician hound trade, specifically they developed from the Grand Bleu de Gascogne. The Petit Bleu is as the name already says smaller as the Grand Bleu and more compact and lighter of bone. The Petit Bleu has a more refined head, compact body, and is more streamlined, making it faster than the Grand Bleu with all of the Grand Bleu's scenting and tracking ability.

USAGE: They are generally used to hunt hare. Gascony Province, the area of their development, is located on the southwestern coast of France. The Petit Bleu has been created through the need of dogs which were more suitable for hunting hares and other small animals, a Hound of moderate speed, created after the demise of the wolf; has been successfully used to hunt deer, fox and hare. The Petit Bleu de Gascogne hunts in a leisurely, methodical manner, and possesses, in the extreme, a great amount of determination, tremendous endurance, desire, self-confidence, sagacity remarkable scenting ability, a deep, powerful melodious voice, a distinct coat color and an aristocratic form. The bitch hunts with 9 monts, the dog starts hunting between 12 and 24 months.

CHARACTER: Petit Bleu de Gascogne are gentle, friendly, sociable dogs with a sense of  humor.  They are resourceful, determined, calm and affectionate and easy to train. As with many hound breeds, they get along well with other dogs. Petit Bleus are active dogs, and require a reasonable amount of exercise. Ideally, an active owner who loves long walks in the country would be a good match for the Petit Bleu.

SOCIAL BEHAVIOR:  Since these dogs live in packs in France they can obviously, get along with other dogs.  Children and visitors will also present no problems.

BLEU DE GASCOGNES IN ESTONIA: At this moment Petit Bleu de Gascogne is the only one of the four Bleus de Gascogne breeds that have been imported to Estonia. The first two Petit Bleu de Gascogne was imported from France by our kennel and kennel Soul Provider in February 2003.
