Kristuse ustav järgija, kelle kohta käivad Kristuse sõnad "Talle on
Maarja Magdaleena tunnuseks on
Mary Magdalen was so called
either from Magdala near Tiberias, on the west shore of Galilee, or possibly
from a Talmudic expression meaning "curling women's hair," which
the Talmud explains as of an adulteress. In the New Testament she is mentioned among the women who accompanied
Christ and ministered to Him, where it is also said that seven devils had
been cast out of her. After she met Jesus, she felt great sorrow for her evil
life. When Jesus went to supper at the home of Simon, Mary came to weep at
His feet. Then with her long hair, she wiped His feet dry and anointed them
with expensive perfume. Some people were surprised that Jesus let such a
sinner touch Him, but Jesus said: "Many sins are forgiven her, because
she has loved very much." She is next named as standing at the foot of
the cross. She saw Christ laid in the tomb, and she was the first recorded
witness of the Resurrection. According to a legend, she lived her last years
in a cave known as Sainte-Baume on Southern France and died when she was 72.
Her feast day is July 22th. |
