Meremäe Hill (204 m above the sea level) is one of
the highest elevations of the Vaaksaare Upland in the eastern part of the
Haanja Heights. Together with Kuksina Hill (212 m above the sea level) they
are the highest peaks of the Vaaksaare Upland. According to folk tradition,
the hill got its name (Hill of the Sea) because of the sight over the surrounding
area it offers; in good weather viewer’s eye can even spot Lake Peipsi
in the distance. A wide panorama of 50-70 kms opens up from the Meremäe,
Kalatsov and Kuksina hills. Kuksina Hill offers a picturesque view over
the Haanja Heights and
Kalatsova Hill - over the Otepää Heights. To the east of Meremäe
Hill the eye catches the Tiirhanna limestone denudation and then in a line
from left to right the highest peaks in the town of Pechory: the TV-tower,
the chimney of the ceramics plant, the greyish tower of St. Peter’s
Lutheran Church and the round gilt cupola of Pechorsky Monastery. Lake Pihkva
can be spotted between the TV-tower and St. Peter’s Church. Behind
the TV-tower are the hillocks of the Mustoja landscape protection area.
In the south-east are the heights of the village of Polesje located by the
Pechory-Izborsk road. With favourable weather conditions, even the smoke
from the chimneys of the New-Izborsk plaster plant is visible. |
