The village of Tobrova lies on the steep slope of the Tobrova
Valley. According to folk tradition, Tobrova is a part the Koolina nulk,
which is one of the twelve areas Seto folk have divided Setomaa into. The
main tourist attractions in the village are
LUIKJÄRVE FARM and the TOBROVA TSÄSSON (chapel) which is an Easter
chapel. LUIKJÄRVE FARM is the only typical Seto farmstead that has
fully survived. The characteristic feature a Seto farm is the closed yard
with the farm buildings and the partition fencing, surrounded by the high
board fence that turns the farmstead into a sort of fortress. Farm buildings
usually included the living-house, the barn, the stable and sheds. The sauna
and threshing barn lay a little off the living-house. At first, roofs of
the buildings were made of straw, later shingle roofs became common. Some
of the buildings of the LUIKJÄRVE FARM date back as far as 150 years,
i.e. the times when saws were not common in Setomaa. Thus the logs for the
buildings were cut by the axe. |
